Happy New Year! Here we are again; this year will be different.
I have said these words way too many times. Catch me dead saying the same this year because, in all honesty, achieving my goals has not been easy.

Every year, we look forward to becoming better versions of ourselves, and one step we take is writing down our goals. It might not be everyone. Some of us ride the waves till the end of the year and then look forward to another roller-coaster year.

I have been the goal-setting type. I have always had a list of things I want to achieve that way; I can stay objective throughout the year. Achieving the goals has not been easy despite feeling like a superhuman and that nothing is impossible. Despite that, I have a few fundamental lessons I have learnt with goal setting from the mistakes I have made:-

Being Realistic
When setting up goals, you should clearly understand what you can or can’t do. The common trap I have always put myself in is setting a “million” goals without being realistic on how I would achieve them. Being unrealistic ends up giving me pressure, anxiety, and a feeling of remorse
when I do not get to achieve the set goals.

Set Priorities within your goals
Not everything is of immediate importance like we make it seem. We have things that are supreme than others. Once you know that, you can adjust your goals or resolutions accordingly by defining what you would like to do first and last.

Break down your goals
I don’t believe in quotes such as “Let your goals be so big that it scares you” when it scares me, I get stuck and afraid to begin. Having small achievable steps helps me tackle them one at a time until I complete them.

Focus on one goal at a time
I need to handle multiple projects at once because choosing to do one thing at a time is one thing I struggle to do. I have noticed that that takes away the attention and quality of what I might put out in the end. I don’t enjoy compromising on quality, so I had to learn how to focus on a single project at a time, no matter how hard it might be until I get it done.

Be Patient
Everything takes time. It’s never a race; it’s a marathon. Make sure you enjoy the journey while at it.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction when defining your goals this year.
